Engine oil coolers are a shell-and-tube heat exchanger sitting quietly between your engine and its cooling system, regulating oil temperature so bearings, pistons and seals survive thousands of hours of heavy-duty operation. When a core starts to fail, the symptoms are often subtle at first — and expensive by the time they're obvious.
## 1. Rising Oil Temperature at Steady Load
If your gauges show oil temperature creeping above the normal 120–150°C operating range under loads that used to run cooler, the core's heat transfer efficiency has likely degraded — often from internal fouling or a partially blocked coolant passage.
## 2. Oil in the Coolant (or Coolant in the Oil)
A cracked core or failed brazing joint lets oil and coolant cross-contaminate. Milky coolant or an oily sheen in the radiator, or a rising oil level with a coolant-like odor, is a clear sign the cooler has breached internally — stop running the engine and replace the core immediately.
## 3. Reduced Engine Power Under Sustained Work
Chronic oil overheating thins lubrication films, increasing internal friction. Operators sometimes notice a gradual, hard-to-pin-down loss of power that improves after idling — a classic sign oil temperature is climbing past its optimal range during continuous duty cycles.
## 4. Visible External Corrosion or Leaks
Ductile cast iron housings and brazed copper tube cores are built for rugged environments, but years of vibration, thermal cycling and exposure can crack seals or corrode housings. Any visible seepage around the cooler warrants inspection before it fails completely.
## 5. Frequent Coolant Top-Offs With No External Leak
If you're topping off coolant regularly but can't find an external leak, internal cooler seepage into the oil galleries is a strong suspect, particularly on engines like the CAT 3406, 3408, C15 and C18 series where oil cooler failures are a well-documented wear pattern.
## Choosing a Replacement Core
